Suellen Hozman’s Artist Statement
Civil
rights are all about equitable opportunity
for people who historically are denied
access. “Untouchable art” denies access to
people who are blind and visually impaired.
Art is universal and should be available to
everyone. This show is a celebration of my
basic philosophy that we all live in the
same neighborhood called planet earth and
it’s a great idea that we be good
neighbors. Part of being a good neighbor
means showing up in the way your neighbor
needs you to.
So, Facial Vision is an art show that is
equally accessible to people who are sighted
or blind.
I’m a dinosaur black and white portrait
photographer who uses available light and
prints on fiber-based paper in the darkroom
in my basement. I have a lousy memory for
faces, but an excellent memory for what it
feels like to be with people. Did I mention
that I’m a crybaby? So, photography is my
longing to have physical memory of a
feeling.
The show has three goals. First, that
everyone has a good time and enjoys the show
without consideration of eye charts.
Secondly, that it is an educational
experience for people to learn that talent
and technology is out there that is
underutilized. Finally, to start a
revolution by stimulating a conversation
with people in the two-dimensional to
three-dimensional engineering, material
science and forensic world to be interested
in offering their talents to people who are
blind to improve academic and life choices.
And, to get people in the adaptive and non-adaptive technology world to have conversations with
people in the two-dimensional to
three-dimensional world. Sometimes it’s
revolutionary just to get people to talk to
each other.
I understand that the revolution requires
that I travel with the show. Please help me
to make that possible. So far, I haven’t
heard back from Oprah. Have show will
travel.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Suellen
Hozman
